In spring 1920 the first paddlers of Dresden followed
their companions of other towns and founded the first canoe club called: »Verein Faltbootfahrer Dresden«
(club of folding boat paddlers Dresden). Starting in 1923 it was named:
»Verein Kanusport Dresden e.V.«.
A bunch of young members were not only enthusiastic about touristy tours
on rivers and lakes, they also liked the (just starting) canoe- and
kayak races. Already in 1921 there was the first competition on the
river Elbe near our location. The division of »canoe & kayak racers« had
developed also by large competitions in town like the »Großen Dresdner
Kanuregatten« (Grand canoe regatta of Dresden) and a German – Marathon –
Master ship on 11 September 1927.
Our boat house, which still exists nowadays – was consecrated in the
middle of a beautiful park on 13 December 1925.
Later a new boom in Germany started in Dresden and Zwickau – slalom
canoeing. Since the middle of the 50’s we have offered the two divisions:
touring and flat-water-canoeing at our canoe club. For 40 years »EDM –
Einheit Dresden Mitte -, canoe department« was well known for its
sportsmen in the former GDR. 1974 – 1984 our members of the racing
division were the most successful of the whole country.
Since 1994 we have called ourselves again »VKD« and just a year later we
welcomed the new sports team of »Dragon boat Races«. The men’s
team is called »Dresden-Bulls«, the lady’s team »Dresden-Honeys« and our
just-for-fun teams »Gigahertzchen« and »Sparkassen-Tiger«. Also in the
touring division our members have actively visited competitions since
1977 - mostly marathons or multi-sports-competitions.
